Tesla suffered a nervous breakdown. Although he got FBI's attention when talking about a death beam, the laser, Nikola Tesla died poor in New York City. It is told that Tesla spent his final years feeding and "communicating" with pigeons. Tesla had many pigeons, and was very fond of a white, female pigeon. Its death in 1922 was one of the main things affecting Tesla's periodic breakdowns and mental depression. Its death was like a light went out in his life.

"I have been feeding pigeons, thousands of them for years. But there was one, a beautiful bird, pure white with light grey tips on its wings; that one was different. It was a female. I had only to wish and call her and she would come flying to me. I loved that pigeon as a man loves a woman, and she loved me. As long as I had her, there was a purpose to my life."

Edison and many of Tesla's other rivals all died famous and rich.
